Individual Report

My radio demo has target listeners that would be aged 13+. The station is going to include a lot of banter to hold more interest for the audience, talking about gossip and celebrities etc.  They would not base a lot on news and weather because this would not engage well with their needs. There will lots of music breaks within the radio show to keep the audience interested and in a way on suspense on what songs are going to come up next. There will also be a lot of linking done within the show and completion so they feel as though they can interact and take part because this relates with the more kinaesthetic people that there is today, therefore bringing in a bigger audience. The Presenters would have to be very fun and lively because the audience would need to be kept interested as at a young age the attention span would be small. Our results from the feedback showed us that the target audience was well linked with the content of the demo and the audience would enjoy it. All of the people we asked said that the content was fit for the audience and appropriate for the needs of them too.  They also felt that the music was suited 100% for the target audience and that the variety was enjoyable but still very popular at the same time.

At the beginning, when coming up with the ideas for XXFM, we were very confused about what to include and what we shouldn't.  We were also going to have the station as an Adult Contemporary but changed due to the idea of having it a CHR because we found that we could identify more with the target audience. We also had made up a running order for the station but felt changing this as we went would give us more freedom to create something better and more original. From changing the running order we were able to use better and more up to date music, more segments within the demo such as weather and celebrity gossip, and clothing adverts. Because of the constant demand for new things such as music and information, coming up with a solid plan was difficult because we wanted to be up to date when we recorded it. Due to this some decisions were left until the last couple of weeks, to make sure that everything was new and popular, therefore suitable for the audience.  Half way through the assignment we also changed group, this changed a lot of things because we had fresh and different opinions to include and incorporate in the ideas. We ended in a group of Hannah, Kirtsy, Me and Danielle. This worked really well because we are all good in the different sections. For example, Hannah is good at editing, Kirtsy is good at planning, I am good at talking and recording and Danielle is good at paper work. Overall this made us a perfect team to work in and be able to make changes and it be easy instead of being confusing and complicated. Also being able to edit things and always have ways to improve shows the skill through all of us because we are constantly learning about new things and different ways to make something better.

There are a few similarities and differences to radio stations of the same genre but XXFM would overall be seen as going against the norm. For example, the radio demo is different from a station such as Capital because there is only one main presenter. Capital has at least two presenters talking at once to give the audience the feeling of a conversation. However XXFM goes against this because the presenter talks to the audience as though they are having a conversation with them and gives the audience the opportunity to call in and give their opinion. Another difference would be the overall context of the demo being casually 'indie'. This gives the demo a unique flare compared to others, making it stand out more. For example, Radio 1 is very hip and carries an obvious fashionable identity and having XXFM different would make more original and also better suited to a more specific audience. There are also a few similarities between XXFM and other CHR stations, these similarities are really what make up a radio station such as the running order and the different segments within it. Having similarities throughout the running order shows the professional approach of our work and that we want to make it as professional as possible. Are running order is a lot like Radio 1, including the celebrity gossip by Fearne Cotton which we have included in our demo. We included it because it is something that a large amount of the targeted audience would want to hear and be very interested in and also because it seemed such a huge success in Radio 1. Throughout the whole radio demo there is different parts of the demo that linked with many different CHR stations which made it almost as good as them because it held similar content just given XXFM's own twist and flavour to it.

Throughout the whole assignment I have learnt a lot and gained many strengths such as working better as a team and being comfortable about hearing my own voice. However, during the course I have had to face up to a couple of weaknesses such as using audacity for the first time and understanding the recording equipment.  When we started the assignment I was not keen on working in a team because I was not sure of the working standards of the other members, but after working with them for a while it came clear that they were a very willing and high standard group which made me feel a lot more comfortable in being able to trust that we as a group would get the work completed. As a group we had many strengths but our main one would be is that we worked so well together. I was good at speaking up and presenting on the radio and knowing what to say; Kirsty was good at being organised and keeping everything in order; Hannah was good at the editing side of the demo and making sure it sounded professional and making it possible for any of us to edit it if we felt it necessary and Danielle was excellent at the paper work and making sure that everything we wrote was kept together and made sense. She also designed the logo with my help therefore she was able to show her creative side to the demo as well. The weaknesses that we had were not seen as a major problem to overcome, therefore making us all a lot more confident with the outcome of the demo. For example my personal weaknesses were using audacity because I had never used it before and seemed complicated. Thankfully Hannah had used it before so when it came to everyone putting in their input of the editing she was able to help me with adding or changing this. After a while I worked through this weakness and felt a lot more confident about using the program. Although, I do not consider myself as being able to use the program without ever encountering a problem I understand the basics and I know it will come useful in the future. A weakness that the group had was trusting each other that we would all do work outside the class. Because we did not know each other very well we did not know what to expect each other but after a while we found that we were all searching and hoping for a good grade, after this we knew that we could become more reliant on each other for completing work and not just doing to the pass standard but the best standard we could.
Overall our strengths and weaknesses made our work what it is and we are very proud of it. The strengths became clear in our work because we knew what to do and how to do it, enabling us to make everything 10 times better and our weaknesses were improved and wok red on until we felt they were at near standards with the rest of our work. I feel very confident with the work my group has completed and pretty sure it will get a good grade.
